He was a 1917 graduate of Southern Methodist University and a 1923 graduate of SMU's School of Religion. He was the first president of SMU's Alumni Association.
He served in Methodist pastorates in Oklahoma, Arkansas and Texas during his ministry. He was head of the Methodist Church's Intermediate Department of the General Sunday School Board in the mid-1920s.
He retired from active ministry in 1959 and joined the staff of First United Methodist Church in Dallas, assisting with hospital visitation, Bible study classes and other pastoral duties.
