Suggested edit: On July 20, 1900 Norman Brooks was killed in a disastrous head-on collision of a southbound Rock Island passenger train headed to Fort Worth and a northbound freight train midway between Rush Springs and Ninnekah in Grady County, Oklahoma. Both train engineers had received messages to wait at a siding for the other train to pass, but the messages were actually amiss with the wrong timing being given for a safe passing. It was reported that Engineer Brooks had stood bravely at his post in control of the air brakes in an attempt to slow the train in time to avoid the collision. His body was buried in Rose Hill Cemetery, in Chickasha, Grady County, Oklahoma where his wife and family moved following his death.
