Gilleland entered service in May of 1864 in Jackson County, Georgia. Company K, Young's Battalion. He was at home on sick furlough at the time of surrender. Cause for pension-infirmity and poverty. Witness- J.A. Elrod Jr., J.N. Rogers. Marcus was paid $60.00 1908-1916, 1917 paid $70.00 for funeral expenses. Hall County Tax Digest 1909-1920 "Confederate Veterans of Hall County" by Patricia K. Jones. 11th Regiment, GA Cavalry. In his obituary it stated that he had been a citizen of the county for a number of years, where he had won the love and esteem of a host of friends by his cordiality, honesty and strong character. He served the cause of the Confederacy in the sixties, and was a staunch and brave defender of the Lost Cause.
