“Maggie” moved with her parents from Grayson County, Texas to Jack County, Texas in time for the birth of her sister Callie in 1877. The family again moved in 1880 and settled in Camden County, Missouri in time for the birth of their son “Jake”. They moved to Western Kansas in June 1887 where the family lived in a dugout with earth walls and floor. The heating and cooking were done with fires made from dried buffalo chips and cow ships that had been picked up on the prairie or from coal that the children picked up along the railroad track.
In 1889 the Shoop family moved from Hamilton County, Kansas to Finney County, Kansas in order to have better farming conditions, living conditions and schools for their children.
About the first of August 1896, “Will” and “Maggie” Huffman along with their daughter, Gertrude made the trip from Finney County, Kansas to Lincoln County, Oklahoma Territory. The trip was made with “Maggie’s” parents, John R. and “Lide” Shoop, and her eight brothers and sisters. Six covered wagons were used, and they contained all the possessions of the combined Shoop and Huffman families. The chickens, turkeys and peafowl were moved in crates in wagons while the cows and colts were herded along behind by “Mollie” and John Speer Shoop. They arrived at Speer in Lincoln County on September 1, 1896. “Will” and “Maggie” Huffman settled on a farm in Tohee Township, southwest of Carney where they farmed until they moved to Hobart in Kiowa County.
“Will” and “Maggie” were divorced and “Will” remarried. “Will” Huffman died in the Babbs Switch School fire in Kiowa County on December 24, 1924**. He was attempting to rescue his daughter, from his second marriage, and she too died in the fire. “Maggie” did not remarry. She raised her son Abner and later took in laundry to support herself and to raise her grandson, Abner Huffman, Jr.
Margaret Elizabeth “Maggie” (Shoop) Huffman died at her home in Hobart, Oklahoma on Saturday night, July 27, 1940 and was buried in the Hobart Cemetery.

* John Speer Shoop was found to have been hit by a car in Jefferson City, Missouri the following month, he died from his injuries 11 days later. His body was taken to Kirksville, Missouri and given to the Medical School there. The remains after use by medical students were cremated and placed in a common grave in Forest Llewellyn Cemetery, Kirksville, MO. Commemorative stone was installed in Carney Cemetery, Carney, Oklahoma in 2020.
** There is no William Huffman on the list of injured and dead from the Babbs Switch School fire. There is some suggestion that he moved to Montana and remarried, but this is not definite.
