Archibald was the son of Thomas & Margaret Edmondson Constant and one of 13 children. On 27 May 1830, he married Maria L Latham. They were the parents of 8 children-Anne, Garrett, Marjorie, Mary (Elliott), Henry, Richard, Catherine, and an unnamed infant.
