Upon graduation from Nether Providence High School in 1938, he attended Swarthmore College. He worked his entire career as a research chemist for P. Q. Company with numerous patents to his credit. He served for many years as an elder at Wallingford Presbyterian Church and volunteered at Helen Kate Furness Library. He and his second wife were avid supporters of the Suburban Music School in Media where she taught cello and he studied piano, an instrument he had played since childhood. He also took up the oboe at age 72.
His legacy will not be his resume but rather the admiration, appreciation and outright love expressed by all who knew him. His "fan club" spanned generations with even teens and young adults seeking his company because of his extraordinary character and empathy. An attentive listener, people were drawn to his quiet, gentle nature and his genuine interest in everyone he met. Bob will be remembered as a "perfect gentleman" exemplified by the tip of his hat to anyone he passed. His trademarks were bow ties and the plaid pants at Christmas. Classical music, travel, and reading enriched his days and no one could extract more information from a museum exhibit. He was endlessly fascinated by history, nature, and the world. He taught three generations of children to body surf and was the king of sandcastle construction.
Bob was married to Mildred Taylor Spencer of Wallingford for 42 years and they had two children. Widowed, he then married Grace Parisano Spencer and expanded his family with the addition of 3 stepdaughters. Their marriage of 23 years ended with her death in 2015. He was the epitome of a family man beloved by his wives, children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. He is survived by daughter Sidne Baglini (Norman) of Malvern, son Taylor Spencer (Martha) of Okatie, SC, and step daughters Debbie Krzywicki (Dan) of Wayne, Wendy Arnold (Dave) of York, and Linda Dalrymple of Lansdale. He is also survived by three beloved granddaughters, Rebekah, Erin, and Bonnie, and predeceased by granddaughter Elan. Four adult great grandchildren, Hayley, Aaron, Andrew and AJ and brother, Philip Spencer and sister Elizabeth Drusedum will miss him dearly.
The service will be private. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Doctors Without Borders, the Alzheimer's Association or Ocean Conservancy.
