Bryan Austin Thomas, 83, passed away on Monday, March 21, 2022 at Community Hospice. He was born in Gilchrist County, Florida and son of the late Henry Irvin Thomas and Eva R.V. Locklear Thomas.
Bryan and his family moved to Jacksonville in 1941 and he attended Andrew Jackson High School Class of 1956. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and served 4 years active duty, attaining the rank of Airman 2nd Class (A2C) and serving 4 years in the Air Force Reserves, attaining the rank of Airman 3rd Class (A3C).
In 1964, Bryan was hired as a Deputy with the Duval County Road Patrol, serving from 1964 - 1969. He became an Electrician, working at several companies and eventually he opened his own business. Later, he worked with the City of Jacksonville as a Building Inspector and also served in Nassau, Baker and St. Johns Counties until 2009.
Bryan loved to dance beach bop style, this leading to being so involved - he was a founding member, served as President and a lifetime member of the Jacksonville Beach Bop Association; founding member of Florida Boppers Association; founding member and lifetime member of Club Savoy Dance Club and eventually was honored by being placed in the Hall of Fame at Club Savoy.
He was a member of Arlington Lodge # 309 F.& A.M., Morocco Shrine and Scottish Rite.
Surviving family include his loving wife, Gloria Thomas and her daughter, Melissa Kenney; 2 daughters: Dayna Garraway (Prentiss) and Janna Thomas (Rory Durbin); 2 grandchildren: Lindsey B. Garraway and Chad P. Garraway (Nicole); 3 great granddaughters: Mya, Kaylee and Brooklyn; 2 sisters: Silvia Jones (Gene) and Elaine Lockerman (Dan); 1 brother: Garriett Thomas (Patty) and a number of nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by his parents and 3 brothers: L.N. Thomas, Jerry Thomas and Richard Thomas. Celebration of life service will be held at 12:30 PM on Thursday, March 31, 2022 at Peeples Funeral Home, 14165 N. Main Street. Graveside shelter service with Military Honors and Masonic Honors will be conferred at 2:30 PM on Thursday at Jacksonville National Cemetery, 4083 Lannie Road, Jacksonville, FL 32218.
