The family had to stop for a while in Vermillion, Sevier, Utah, because Emma was ready to give birth to their new baby, a daughter, Hannah Eliza, born 2 February 1878. While the mother was still bedfast from the birth, John, their fifth child, died as a result of being kicked in the stomach by a horse. The children were outside playing, and Johnny, only two years old, was following them around. He was kicked and then brought in and laid on the bed with his mother. He was hurt badly. He opened his eyes and said, "I can't see. I can't see my baby sister", and then he died.

Not known where they buried him, as they didn't go back to Mendon, Utah for months.
