Alvin John Van Dalen, lovingly known as our "Buddy", met his Maker's face after a 25 year struggle with Parkinson's Disease (PD) on Saturday, February 18, 2006.

Alvin was born on March 13, 1942 in Bellingham, WA and was raised in Lynden as the firstborn son of John and Bernice (Visser) Van Dalen.

Nearly 45 years ago, Alvin met and married his lifetime, hometown sweetheart Barbara Ann King. Before graduating from Lynden High School, Alvin was actively involved as a young adult in FFA, football, and as Senior Class President. Alvin fulfilled his enduring passion of serving the Lord through raising his children with Barb and being a devoted husband and grandfather. As a Dairy Farmer, the couple's faith, trust and work ethic were integrated into every aspect of their lives together. They attended Faith Reformed Church in Lynden.

The development of leadership was cultivated in Alvin through FFA. Alvin's participation over the years on the following boards indicated his willingness to encourage the wise management of economic, environmental, educational and human resources of our community: Whatcom County Planning Commission; Washington State Dairy Federation; Faith Reformed Church and the Lynden School District Board of Directors. Those who worked closely with Alvin remember the hallmarks of his character as ones of integrity, teamwork and discernment. The legacy that Alvin leaves is a blessing to his wife and children. They had the good fortune of trusting that "His strength was [being] made perfect in thy weaknesses." While Alvin was long-suffering with PD, he was driven to graciously give everything he had to his friends and loved ones.

Alvin was preceded in death by his son Monty Lee Van Dalen; his parents-in-law, Truman and Emogene King, and granddaughter Abbey Mae Poag.

He is survived by his wife Barbara "Guela;" children, son Scott and wife Eileen (Scholten) Van Dale, daughter Becky and husband Steve Midboe, son Shane and Amy (Faber/Poag) Van Dalen, and son Blake and Melissa (Bouma) Van Dalen.

Visitation hours will be from 6 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 22, and from 9 a.m. to Noon on Thursday, Feb. 23, at Gillies Funeral Home in Lynden.

The family would like to invite everyone to the memorial celebrating Alvin's life on Thursday, Feb. 23, at 4:00 p.m. in North County Christ the King Church, 123 North 17th Street, Lynden.

We would like to express our sincerest appreciation to the community for administering God's grace by serving our husband, dad, and Grandpa Buddy with your individual gifts in the final transitions of him "gettin' to where he was goin'."

Alvin, Barbara Ann will be there as soon as her "work" is finished!

In lieu of flowers, memorials in Alvin's name may be made to the Christian Health Care Center; 855 Aaron Dr., Lynden, Wa. 98264.

Services are under the care of Gillies Funeral Home & Cremation Services of Lynden.
