Alan James Lutter, 69 of Ankeny, died Friday, March 25, 2022, at his home in Ankeny.

Alan was born September 7, 1952, in Spencer, Iowa, the son of Merritt Dennis and Veronica Rose (Schmitt) Lutter. He graduated from Valley High School in 1971. Following his graduation he farmed in Alta with his grandpa Frank Schmitt and uncle Jim Schmitt. Alan was united in marriage to Karen Marie Nehring, the love of his life on December 6, 1975, at Lakeside Presbyterian Church in Storm Lake. This union was blessed with three children James, Melissa, and Kevin. Alan worked many years as a combine technician for various John Deere dealerships. Alan retired from Van Wall Equipment in Madrid in 2012.

Alan never met a stranger and would talk to anyone. He was an avid collector of Oliver tractors and enjoyed participating in Plow Days. He loved the outdoors, especially camping and fishing. Alan collected guns and was a gun smith. A passion of his was Prairie dog hunting in Nebraska. He could often be found in his shop, working on one of his many projects.

Alan's family was his world. His children joined him in one of his passions of working on the farm. Alan had the opportunity to spend vacation time with his his children and grandchildren in Disney World and Estes Park and many other family vacations. Alan's grandchildren have fond memories of camping with their papa. He often spoke of the great times he had during these travels. Alan cherished each of his grandchildren.

Alan is survived by his wife, Karen of Ankeny; his children: James "Jim" (Beth) Lutter of Carroll, NE, Melissa (Casey) Hughes of West Des Moines and Kevin (Emily) Lutter of Kelley; his mother, Veronica Rose Lutter of West Des Moines; his grandchildren: Alex Hughes, Claire Lutter, Audrey Lutter, Logan Hughes, Josie Lutter, Paige Lutter and Finley Lutter; his uncle, Jim Schmitt; his siblings: Kathy (Ken) Wilgenbusch, Terry Lutter, Mark (Kathie) Lutter, Dale (Cindi) Lutter, Lisa Lutter and George (Sharleen) Lutter; his in-laws, Marvin (Mary) Nehring, Diane (Larry) Sennert, Dwayne (Vicki) Nehring and Mary (Michael) Ewalt; and his life-long friend, John (Wanda) Patrick.

Alan was preceded in death by his father; his brother, Roy Lutter (in infancy); his nephews, Keith Wilgenbusch and Darrin Lutter; a great niece Corbin Wilgenbusch, his father and mother-in-law, Alvin and Helen Nehring; and his beloved pet pig, Petula.
A memorial service will be 7 p.m. Friday, April 1, 2022, at Rasmusson-Ryan Funeral Home (1418 Fawcett Pkwy) in Nevada. Family will greet friends beginning at 5 p.m. until the time of the service. Burial will be at a later date at Buena Vista Memorial Cemetery in Storm Lake.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the family for the use to be determined at a later date.
