Derek Scott Holland was born April 11, 1979, in Moline, Illinois, the son of Scott and Debra (McDowell) Holland.
He graduated from United Township High School in 1997 and attended Aurora University in Aurora, Illinois, playing Division III baseball and excelling as a catcher. He was united in marriage to Jeanette Bird on Valentine's Day, 2005 in Rock Island, Illinois. They have been inseparable since they met. Derek was the operations manager for American Finishing Resources in Eldridge and most recently worked for Deck Supply in Walcott. He was a member of the Twin Rivers Bass Club along with his dad, Scott. He also enjoyed coaching Graham's baseball team. Derek adored his family: his wife and children meant the world to him. He had a great sense of humor and enjoyed making people laugh. He  was well liked by everyone who knew him or ever met him. He enjoyed fishing and had started showing his honey holes off to his son, Graham. Derek also enjoyed hunting and playing competitive volleyball in multiple leagues, sand and indoor alike. He also played walleyball where he competed in a national tournament.
Survivors include his wife, Jeanette and their children, Justin, Graham and Emersyn; his parents, Scott and Debbie Holland; his maternal grandmother, Nadine McDowell; his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Michelle and Jon Curtis and his sisters-in-law, Colleen Bird and Erica (Daniel) Krog.
He was preceded in death by his infant son, Cameron; his grandparents, Vesta and Herbert Holland and Paul McDowell and his brother-in-law, Justin Bird.
The Holland family would like to thank the staff at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota who took such exceptional care of Derek since February. They also are so very thankful to the Le Claire Police Department and the Scott County Sheriff's Department for their immediate and caring response and to Mel Foster Insurance Co. (Jeanette's work family) and to their many friends for their loving and compassionate care they have shown throughout this past year.
