Thomas was born in Williston, VT to Laurence Hayes and Mary Ellen (Margaret) Lynch; both immigrants from Ireland. His siblings were Lawrence (1861-1943), John (1859-1863), Mary Ellen (1852-1919) and Margaret (1854-1932). He was a salesman in Brooklyn prior to being stricken with locomotor ataxia which causes an individual to lose the ability to precisely control one's own bodily movements. Can be caused by a viral infection like chicken pox. He eventually committed suicide.
