"Nothing better than fat cows, fat calves, and green grass … or goats with a heavy coat of mohair"—Glenn Dale Duncan

Glenn Dale Duncan, 87, passed away in the early morning of March 15, 2022, at Goldthwaite Health and Rehabilitation.

Dale was born at his parents' home in Payne Gap, Texas, on November 23, 1934, to Orbie Duncan and Willie "Bill" Duncan. He was an only child, but he grew up with a close extended family.

He attended Payne Gap School through 1943 and then transferred to Star School for a short time before moving with his family to Lometa, where he graduated high school in 1951. After returning to the family farm in Payne Gap, he met Shirley Hamilton at a carnival in Star and married her on February 12, 1966. They raised their two children, Sam and Mollie, in Star.

Dale was a consummate rancher and a devoted steward of the family's land and livestock. In his lifetime, he grew his parents' modest homestead into one of the largest ranches in Mills County. He took great joy in seeing the livestock thriving—he especially loved Angora goats and Rambouillet sheep. He coddled the sickly and would never let orphan kid goats, lambs, or calves suffer. He was the embodiment of the good shepherd. Likewise, he had a soft heart for those in need and was always quick to offer a helping hand.

He loved his family and enjoyed telling stories. He often recounted the many adventures of his youth, and these stories became the way he passed on the important events of his life. He also enjoyed reading, games, and Sudoku puzzles, and he participated in many raucous family card games. He was also a skilled domino player, and he regularly played and socialized with his friends at many domino social groups over the years.

Dale was a Christian and believed in the power of prayer—each meal began with a prayer of thanks.

He is deeply missed by his family and friends.

Dale is preceded in death by his parents, Orbie and Willie "Bill" Duncan, and his wife Shirley Duncan (née Hamilton). Immediate survivors include his son, Samuel Duncan, and his partner, Jeffrey Lee, of Payne Gap, Texas; his daughter, Mollie Kelly (née Duncan), and her husband, Trammell Kelly, of Waco, Texas; his granddaughter, Abby Parmer, of Waco, Texas; and his step granddaughters, Paige Kelly, of Waco, Texas, and McKenzie Stark (née Kelly) and her husband Aaron Stark of Richardson, Texas.

Funeral service will be held at Stacy-Wilkins Funeral Home in Goldthwaite, 10:00 a.m. Friday, March 25, 2022, with burial following at the Payne Gap Cemetery. Family and community members will host a meal after the burial at the Payne Gap Schoolhouse. Family and friends are invited to a visitation at Stacy-Wilkins Funeral Home on Thursday, March 24, 2022, from 5-7:00 p.m.
