Former New Jersey State Assemblyman and Phillipsburg Attorney, Harold J. Curry, passed away peacefully on Monday March 21, 2022, surrounded by family and his loving and devoted caregiver, Tina Doll. Harold was born in Phillipsburg, New Jersey, to Harold Joseph (Joe) and Lucy Kingfield Curry on June 7, 1931. He shared 57 years with his beloved wife Joanne (Daly), enjoying many trips to the Jersey Shore, Killington and Disney World over the years.

Harold graduated from Phillipsburg High School ('49) and earned a BA from Lafayette College ('53). He then served in the United States Army 1953-1955, attaining the rank of First-Lieutenant, Infantry – Training Instructor, Company and Commanding Officer HQ Co 1st Battalion 1st Infantry Training Regimen. After leaving the military Harold went on to earn his Juris Doctor from Rutgers Law School class of 1958.

After graduating law school Harold clerked with the State of New Jersey Office of Attorney General and for the Honorable Frank J. Kingfield, Judge of the New Jersey Superior Court. He engaged in the private practice of law from the building he grew up in on South Main Street, joined by his cousin, John (Jack) Kingfield, in the Law Offices of Curry & Kingfield, until his retirement from Curry & Curry where he had worked with his son Matthew. He loved to tell of how that building housed his grandfather's shoe store before it became a law office. Harold was elected to two terms in the New Jersey State Assembly in 1964 and 1966 where he served as Chairman of the Agriculture, Conservation and Economic Development Committee 1966-1968. He also acted as the Warren County delegate to the New Jersey Constitutional Convention.

Harold was appointed Warren County Adjuster in 1968 and served in that position until 1999. During his time as County Adjuster, he served as Vice-President of the New Jersey Association of County Adjusters from 1971-1984. Harold represented the Phillipsburg Police Department ('62-'67), Phillipsburg Building & Loan Association ('59-'67), Borough of Alpha ('71-'78), and the Warren County Election Board ('68-'77). Harold was elected Secretary and then President of the Warren County Bar Association ('75-'76). He served as the Chairman of the Warren County Bar Association Ethics Committee ('70-'72), the New Jersey State Bar Association Judicial Appointment Committee ('70-'74), the New Jersey Supreme Court Committee on Character & Fitness ('74-'76), and the New Jersey Supreme Court Committee on The Unauthorized Practice of Law ('75-'84).

Following his father's footsteps, Harold was a member of the Board of Directors for Phillipsburg National Bank and Trust Company 1978 to 1988 (Chairman '86-'88), Vista Bancorp, Inc. 1988 to 2002 (Vice Chairman '95 – '98, Chairman '98-'02), Twin Rivers Community Bank 1989 to 2000, and United National Bank Corp. 2002/2003 and the Warren County Welfare Board from 1968 to 1999.

Harold also gave back to his community, serving as member of the Board of Directors--Joseph H. Firth Youth Center, Chairman Warren County March of Dimes, Exalted Ruler BPO of Elks--Phillipsburg Lodge ('65-'66), Phillipsburg Rotary Club, Knights of Columbus, American Legion--John Dolak Alpha Post, Holy Name Society, St. Philip & St. James Roman Catholic Church Building Fund Drive for High School & Convent, Board of Directors Association for Retarded Citizens Warren Unit, Inc. ('80-'84), Vice-Chairman YMCA Eason, Phillipsburg & vicinity Building Fund Drive ('80-'81), Board of Directors Chelsea Title & Guaranty Co. ('82-'86), Diocese of Metuchen Bequest & Planned Gift Committee ('85-'86), Citizen's Advisory Committee of Town of Phillipsburg Warren County Historical Society, and as Vice President and President of the Phillipsburg High School Class of 1949 Alumni Association, Phillipsburg Downtown Merchants Association, Phillipsburg Riverview Organization, Phillipsburg Historical Society.

Harold also loved to spend time with his children's sports activities and volunteered as a coach for Steel Hill Biddy and Midget baseball, as a member and President of the Penn-Jersey Swim League 1973-1974 and one of organizers of Penn-Jersey Summer Swim League for children in Warren, Hunterdon, and Northampton Counties, Treasurer of the Easton Area YM-YWCA Aquatic Club 1972-1983, and as a member and President of the Lopatcong Swim Team Booster Club for 20 years. He himself also enjoyed sports and was one of the organizers of the Hillcrest Racquet Club. He was always active, playing Tennis, golf, going to the "y" and counting his vertical miles skied on his many trips to Killington. He also participated in the 1995 Central Jersey Senior Olympic Games, winning 3 gold and 3 silver medals.

For his many years of service, Harold received numerous awards including, 1965 Phillipsburg Area Junior Chamber of Commerce-Distinguished Service Award, 1966 Award Citation by New Jersey Recreation Society Inc., 1966 Edition of Outstanding Young Men of America, 1967 Legislative Conservationist Award, by the New Jersey Federation of Sportsman Club, and was inducted to the Phillipsburg High School Wall of Fame in 2001.

Harold was preceded by his wife Joanne D. Curry, and daughter Mary Ellen Curry. He is survived by his three sons: H. Matthew Curry and wife Grace, Robert J Curry and wife Carey, and Christopher J. Curry, along with seven grandchildren Michael, Joseph, Daniel, Owen, Ava, Ryan and Nicholas.

Calling hours will be held on Sunday, March 27, 2022, from 4-6pm at the Finegan Funeral Home at 302 Heckman Street in Phillipsburg, NJ. A Funeral Mass will be held on Monday at 10am at St. Philip & St. James Catholic Church, 430 So. Main Street, also in Phillipsburg. The entombment will be at the Holy Apostles Mausoleum in Greenwich Township, NJ.
