John Gould, Jr. of Manistee, Michigan passed away on March 18, 2022 at Munson Healthcare Manistee Hospital at the age of 94.
John was born to John and Frances Julia (Melchior) on September 5, 1927 in Manistee. He graduated from Manistee High School in 1945. John enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1946. He was a truck driver and achieved PFC and became a commissioned Reserve Second Lieutenant through ROTC. He married Shirley (Pomeroy) on August 26, 1950 at Guardian Angels Church in Manistee. He attended Michigan State University and graduated in 1952 with a degree in Economics.
John was a career officer in the United States Army and was on active duty for 22 years beginning in 1952. His tours of duty included Japan, France, Korea, and Vietnam. He received numerous decorations, medals, commendations, and citations, including the Army Commendation Medal, Legion of Merit with Oak Leaf Cluster, World War II Victory Medal, and Army of Occupation Medal Japan. He retired as a Lieutenant Colonel Quartermaster Corps in 1971.
After the Army, John was a teller, assistant auditor, and security officer of the 1st National Bank of Southern Maryland, and was promoted to branch manager. In 1976, he moved back to Manistee where he was a loan officer and branch manager of the Manistee branch of Northwestern Savings & Loan Association.
John was a member of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Manistee, the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, BPO Elks #250, Kiwanis, Michigan State University Alumni Association, and Phi Kappa Sigma Fraternity. He was an avid coin and stamp collector. He also enjoyed bowling and watching sports, especially MSU games.

Along with his beloved wife Shirley of 67 years, he was preceded in death by his parents, John and Julia, sisters and brothers-in-law, Ellen and Howard Hawley, and Carter and James Hubbard, brother-in-law, John (Mary) Lambrosa, and son-in-law, Kenn Stinson.
A memorial service and celebration of his life will be held Saturday, June 25th, 2022 at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church at 410 Second Street in Manistee with Reverend Canon C. Anne Hallmark and Reverend Jody Bambas officiating.
The family will be receiving family and friends at 10:00 a.m. followed by a service at 11:00 a.m. with luncheon to follow at the church. Burial of cremains will be held 2:00 p.m. at Oak Grove Cemetery, where graveside Military Honors will be given by the members of the Manistee County United Veterans Council - Ritual Squad.
