Basil was the youngest of five children of Thomas Yaxley Barker (b1879 in Ulverstone, Tasmania) and his first wife Flora Jane Rough (b1886 in Beaconsfield, Tasmania). Thomas (a Labourer) and Flora married in 1905 in Zeehan, Tasmania and lived in Southport, Penguin, Latrobe, Franklin and Hythe in the Huon Valley where they raised their family. Thomas worked as a Labourer and Mill Hand and he and Jane Divorced in 1919 - both remarried.
In 1934 Basil married Fay Marjorie Carlton (b1912 in Derby, Tasmania) in Hobart. According to the Census Records, Basil had 'No Occupation' until he enlisted in the Australian Army in November 1939. He served in the Middle East and New Guinea (Corporal; Service No:TX629) and was attached to 2/12 Infantry Battalion when he was KiA in 1943. Fay remarried in 1955 and died in 1974.
