Larry Matheny, 76, of Danville, passed away Monday, January 4, 2016 at Baptist Hospital in Louisville. He was born in Charleston, West Virginia to the late William and Olive Hill Matheny.Dr. Matheny holds a B.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Virginia and was a Centre College professor of government for more than 39 years. He was awarded the John Marshall Harlan Professorship in Government in 1994 and held this professorship until his retirement in 2005. Dr. Matheny frequented the Boyle County Public Libary as well as Centre College Library to enjoy his love for books and continued learning.He is survived by a son, Dan Matheny (Kim) of Texas; a daughter, Meg Matheny of Louisville; three brothers: Charlie Matheny of Lexington, Denny Matheny of Charleston, WV, and Rick Matheny of St. Albans, WV; a sister: Marianne Samples of South Carolina; and two grandchildren: Mason and Jackson Matheny.Along with this parents, Dr. Matheny was preceded in death by two brothers, Bill and Tom Matheny; and a sister, Janice Kiner.Visitation will be held from 5-8 PM at Preston Pruitt Spurlin Funeral Home on Thursday, January 7, 2016.Memorial contributions are preferred to The Larry Matheny Scholarship fund, established by his former students in 2010 for Centre College students who have declared a major in the Social Sciences.
