Don L. Warren, 90, passed away on February 22, 2022, at his home in Chewelah. Don was born on November 20, 1931, in Chewelah, WA., the son of Albert and Una Elvina (Ross) Warren.
Don spent his early years in the Chewelah – Bluecreek area, helping the family at an young age in the fields and forest around their home hunting, logging, in the sawmill, building, with the animals, whatever needed done to help out in the needs of the family. Don attended elementary grades in the Bluecreek area schools, and then Chewelah through the 10th grade, after which he entered the full time work force.
In the early 1940's, the Warren family was partners with a neighboring family in a sawmill that contracted with the government to supply lumber for the building of the Larson Air Force Base and growing city needs in Moses Lake. Don remembered the trip to take a whole day from Bluecreek to the Moses Lake delivery. Don also worked at National Foods some time later, making the weekly trip from Chewelah with several of his friends in a shared car.
At 16, Don started traveling to the west side of the state to work, coming home as needed. Don's philosophy was there was always a job if you wanted one, and worked at anything he could find, including Northwest Chair and a concrete cement block business in Tacoma. Don delivered blocks for repair at the capitol buildings in Olympia after the 1949 6.7 Puget Sound earthquake. Most of Don's many years of hard work centered around the logging industry, from hand saw and horses, to automated equipment and horse-powered engines. Many stories have been told ~ "Ned" the big percheron logging horse - that returned home on his own while Don drove the truck to the mill; and Jackie driving the logs to town - with baby Mort on the floor, while Don got another load ready! And "steering" the loaded trailer down the west side of Cedonia pass to take the logs to Bowes saw mill in Hunters. Don figured he'd been on just about every logging road in the area during his many years of logging, wood cutting, hunting, huckleberry picking, and fishing this land that he loved.
At 14, Don met Jackie (Jacqueline June Covey) at Sunday School, and knew immediately this girl was going to be his wife! That began the friendship that led to the exchange of marriage vows on June 5, 1951. Soon after saying I do, the couple loaded up the car with everything they could and headed to Republic, Don had a logging job to go to, and then for a short time, ran road-grader, keeping the newly built Sherman Pass highway open through the winter. After following the logging jobs and living in many different places, the couple moved to Colville in 1958 to settle and raise their four children – Alden, Thelma, Maurice "Mort", Juanitta , and for a time, "Tiger and GuyGuy". For several years, with partner Jackie in the seat beside him, Don drove highway truck, delivering freight across the nation. Don also worked for J E Merritt, at Alcoa. In his "spare time", Don built or helped build 13 log homes. Don and Jackie, and loved friends, were also able to travel the United States with their 5th wheel after retirement. Another favorite was to pick up vehicles for God Fearing Bros from across the nation and deliver back to Chewelah. Don and Jackie were married for 67 years when Jackie went home to heaven in 2018. They were best friends, and where you saw one, you saw the other.
Don had a faith in God that carried him strongly through all the years of his life. Don loved the church, and served in many capacities in every church he attended, from deacon to Sunday school teacher, working with Royal Rangers and children, or assisting in the never ending building projects. Don loved to volunteer at churches and Bible camps, especially Fruitland Bible Camp, as often as he could. Don and Jackie were working hands with familiar faces wherever they knew of a need.
Don was preceded in death by wife Jackie, 2018, and one son, Alden Warren, 2009.
He is survived by children, Thelma Siegel (Butch) of Kettle Falls, WA; Maurice "Mort"
Warren (Debbie) of Addy, WA; Juanitta Pickens (Carl) of Chewelah, WA; daughter-in-law Vicky Warren Atchison (Jerry) of Omak, WA; extended family Ty & Guy Hardwick; (brother-inlaw & fishing buddy) Joe Covey (Rose); sister-in-laws Allie Sketo, Ila Mae Covey & Mary Covey; 24 grandchildren, 38 great grandchildren, 8 great great grandchildren, innumerable nieces and nephews, and many many much loved lifetime friends.
Don has left his footprint in our hearts and on this land. Don's faith in God carried him not only through his life on this earth, but has carried him home… to heaven! Come share a time of remembrance in his honor at a memorial service to be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, April 23, 2022, at the Faith Community Church, 313 West Colville Ave., Chewelah, WA., ash committal to follow at Valley Cemetery, Valley, WA.
