Fred Johnson, 85, of Grinnell, died on Sunday, March 20, 2022, at Unity Point Allen Medical Hospital in Waterloo, Iowa. Celebration Life at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell. Burial with military honors at Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell with a luncheon at the Elks in Grinnell.

Memorials may be directed to the Grinnell Tiger Booster Club or the Veterans Memorial Building Restoration Project.

Fred was born on May 8, 1936, in Grinnell, Iowa, the son of Leroy Walter and Helen Bertha Ann Hagenlock Johnson.

Fred married his high school sweetheart, Patricia Peak Johnson, on June 23, 1957. They would have celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary in June. They lived Grinnell, Iowa raising three children, Gigi, Shelly, and Stan.

Fred graduated from Grinnell High School in 1955. He started working at the age of 12; delivering papers, working on the railroad, gas stations, and various jobs while going to school and participating in any sport he could. After high school graduation, Fred worked for Van's Filling Station and then in Sales at Eisenman Motors until he was drafted into the service in January 1959 through 1969 serving in the United States Army for thirteen months in Korea.

After the service, he returned to Eisenman Motors going into partnership with Al Eisenman Motors until they closed the business in 1981. He continued to work in Auto Sales until he retired in 1995.

Fred enjoyed all sports as a participant and a spectator. He was an outstanding athlete and participated in numerous sports throughout high school. Fred was an avid fan of Grinnell High School athletics and loved following all his children and grandchildren's athletic events. Fred was a die-hard fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes, Chicago Cubs, and Grinnell Pioneers. Fred's love of competition carried over with his friends while playing golf games and pitch tournaments. Fred was also very proud of his hometown and enjoyed sharing Grinnell's opportunities with others.

Family was first and foremost in Fred's life and he held great pleasure in sharing time with his family.

Surviving are his wife, Patricia; his children, Gigi (Rick) Burkett, Waukee, Iowa, Shelly (Greg) Greiner, Adel, Iowa, and Stan (Katie) Johnson, Grinnell; his sister, Darlene (Jim) Shope, Toledo, Iowa; sister-in-law, Jean Kinnaird, Grinnell; brother-in-law, Robert Peak, Grinnell; 11 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; grandparents; nephew, Mike Shope; and brother-in-law, Wendell Kinnaird.
