John was the son of Samuel Buell & Deborah Griswold. On November 20, 1695 in Windsor, Hartford County, Connecticut, he married Mary Loomis. To this union, 13 children were born.
Known as Deacon John Buell, he moved to Lebanon, Connecticut, in about 1695 and then in 1721, to Litchfield. He was one of the first settlers there. John Buell was a selectman in 1717 and 1718. With many others, he petitioned the General Assembly at Hartford in 1719 for the right to establish the new town of Litchfield. In September 1738, the proprietors of the new town of Goshen met in the home of John Buell to organize the town.
The record of his death in the History of Goshen, wrongly states that his original gravestone had the following inscription:
"Here lies interred the body of Capt. John Buell, Esqr., who lived in the office of a deacon in the Church in Litchfield, and departed this life April the (transcription error) 9th, 1746, in the 75th year of his age" --pp. 435-6.
