Kathryn Meda Poorman James, age 77, of Thomson, Illinois, died Monday, December 31, 2007, at her son's home in Fulton, Illinois, after a seven year battle with breast cancer. A funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m. Thursday, January 3, 2008 at the Law-Jones Funeral Home in Thomson, with a visitation from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service. Pastor Ron Abbott will officiate. Burial will be in Lower York Cemetery in Thomson. A visitation will be held from 4:00-7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 2, 2008 at the funeral home. Memorials may be given to Mercy Hospice in Kathryn's memory.

Kathryn was born on November 8, 1930 in rural Thomson, the daughter of Marion E. and Gladys L. (Shelly) Poorman. She attended Thomson area schools. Kathryn married Harold N. James September 29, 1951 in Thomson.

Kathryn owned, managed, and cooked at the James Café in Thomson for many years. In her younger years she was employed by the Savanna Army Ordnance Depot, and the Savanna Garment Factory. She previously worked for Lord Baltimore Press in Clinton, General Electric in Morrison, and hauled milk for several dairies in Carroll County. She was also a school bus driver for the Thomson School District. Kathryn loved to watch movies, dance with her husband, Harold, and play the slots and euchre. Kathryn provided love and affection to all of her family and dear friends.

Kathryn is survived by her husband Harold; one daughter Mazie (Bruce) Angus of Coal Valley, Illinois; three sons, Bill (Sherry) James of Fulton, Wayne (Ronda) James of Sabula, Iowa, Gary (Barb Dickau) James of Fulton; two sisters, Helen (John) Michaletti of Rock Island, Illinois, Anna (Paul) Tambling of Eastman, Wisconsin; three brothers, William (Virginia) Poorman Haas of Fulton, Robert Poorman Haas of New Orleans, Louisiana, and James (Sue) Poorman Haas of Loganville, Wisconsin; four brothers-in-law, Jerry (Pat) James of Lanark, Illinois, Floyd (Linda) James, Jr. of Savanna, Illinois, Clifton (Rita) James of Mount Vernon, Iowa, and Terry (Ruth) James of Savanna; eight grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; and numerous neices and nephews.

Kathryn is preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Glen Poorman, Herbert Poorman, and John "Jack" Poorman Haas; one sister Jennie Poorman Kness; and one great grandson Austin Watkins.
