Memorial services for Winfred L. "Dr. Fred" Medcalf are scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church with Dr. Alton Fannin officiating.
Medcalf was born Oct. 21, 1928, to Reat I. and Anna Mae Edwards Medcalf in Tecumseh. He died on Thursday, April 1, 1999, at his residence in Ardmore. He married Patricia Sue Hensley on June 18, 1950, in Konawa.
Medcalf grew up and graduated from high school in Marlow. He went on to graduate from Pasadena City College in California, Oklahoma A&M in Stillwater and the University of Oklahoma School of Medicine. He also attended Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas.
Medcalf was an ordained deacon and a licensed Minister of the Gospel. He was a member of the Tri-County Medical society, a life member of the Oklahoma State Medical Society and the American Medical Association as well as emeritus member of the American College of Rheumatology. He was appointed as the first Medical Missionary to Thailand by the Southern Baptist Foreign Mission Board in 1959. He and his wife served as Foreign Missionaries to Thailand until 1968. While there he helped to establish a hospital in Bangkla, Thailand. Upon his return to Ardmore he practiced medicine at the Arthritis Clinic.
He is survived by his wife, Sue of the home. Three sons, Paul I., Fort Worth, Texas, Dr. Timothy W., Texarkana, Texas, Michael L. of Ardmore; two daughters Pamela S. Thompson, Roff, and Valerie L. Coffman, Healdton; nine grandchildren; a brother-in-law, Bill Hensley, McLoud; and one sister, Freeda Fay Edwards.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.
