His brother, Charles Story Newell is buried in Old Sweetwater in Copiah Co and was born , 1787 in South Carolina. The "S" in John's name likely stands for , "Story" just like his brothers. He had a grandson named, John Story Newell. He is believed to have been buried in the Newell graveyard in Lincoln Co.

He married Christian McDonald and the couple settled in what was then Copiah Co in about 1825. It later became Lincoln County and is in the Red Star area along the Newell road. They had 4 children, John Daniel, Mary Ann, Elizabeth and Thomas J. Soon after arriving in Copiah Co , John S. died leaving his wife and 4 young children. After his death, his widow had two other children which were called Newell's, Margaret and William Harry.
