US Congressman. He served in the United States House of Representatives from Alaska's at-large district from March 6, 1973 to March 18, 2022. He earned his associate's degree from Yuba College in 1952 and a bachelor's degree from Chico State University in 1956. He served in the United States Army from 1955 to 1957 with the 41st Tank Battalion. After college, he moved to Alaska and settled in Fort Yukon. He went on to work at various occupations including teaching and running a barge operation that delivered products and supplies to villages along the Yukon River. In 1964, he was elected as the mayor of Fort Yukon and served in this position until 1968. Two years later, he was also elected to the Alaska State House of Representatives and went on to serve there from 1967 to 1971. In 1970, he was elected to the State Senate and went on to serve one term before deciding to run, as a Republican, for a seat in the United States House of Representatives in 1972. He ran against incumbent Democrat Rep. Nick Begich and lost in the November general election to him. Begich, along with House Majority Leader Hale Boggs, was in a small airplane when it went down in Alaska during the campaign and was later declared legally dead in December of 1972. Young ran in the special election for the seat in March of 1973 and was successful in that race. He went on to serve for twenty-five terms before his passing in March of 2022. During his house tenure, he served as Chair of both the House Resources and Transportation and Infrastructure Committees. At the time of his passing, he also was the Dean of the United States House of Representatives.
