David Melton Cox, lovingly known as "Nonnie", was larger than life. From humble beginnings he was a self-made man, successful and multi-faceted. He was most proud of and highly devoted to his large family of 81 members. His next greatest passion was his alma mater, Texas A&M University. On any given Saturday you could find him in a sea of maroon at Kyle Field or at home cheering on his Fightin' Texas Aggies. He was a lifelong member of Tabernacle Baptist Church and faithfully attended the Young at Heart Sunday School class.

Nonnie and Memaw laid the deep roots of their blended family tree. With this one-of-a-kind family came its own unique traditions! From Christmas BINGO; that would make the most meek in the family become fierce competitors; to our beloved annual Nonnie Work-day.

He was able to turn his birthday gift of a family "workday" into a tradition held dear to us all. Nonnie loved his yard and took great pride in his trees, especially his many workers that brought his visions to life with each buzz of the chainsaw.

He was born April 26, 1936 in Garrett, Texas. He attended Garrett and Ennis schools, graduating Ennis High School in 1954. He turned down a football scholarship from a junior college to attend Texas A&M University on an academic scholarship. While at A&M, he was an officer in the Corps of Cadets and a member of the Fightin' Texas Aggie Class of 1958. David proudly served as 2nd Lieutenant in the US Army Reserves. Upon graduation from Texas A&M, he worked for the Texas Comptroller in Austin as an auditor. He excelled in sales at International Harvester and Burroughs in the Dallas and East Texas areas. While at Burroughs, he founded Nationwide Leasing Corporation, with only $500 and his office being a cardboard box in the trunk of his car. Soon after, he founded Melton Services. He founded multiple business companies and ventures in his lifetime. His investments yielded fruit, and others valued his business advice. He was still operating DACA Family Partners at the time of his death. Nonnie was active in local banking life and was one of the 12 founders of First National Bank of Ennis. He donated 20 years of service directing traffic at the beginning of each school year at Crockett Early Childhood Center in Ennis. The full extent of his business accomplishments and influences can never be fully measured.

He is survived by his children: Stephanie Cox Marchbanks, Kelly Betik and husband Dwayne, Deanna Gryder (DeeDee,) Tim Cox and wife Sheila, and Teresa Cox.

Grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the apple of his eye. They are Jason Cox, wife Rachel and their son Riley; Natalie Cox and son Cade; Adam Fuller and daughter Makaylah; Aaron Fuller, wife Alyece and children Aaron and Emberlynn; Daron Fuller; Ashley (Cox) Keasler, husband Mitch and children Keagan and Sawyer; John David Cox and daughter Brynnlee; Joel Cox and daughter Chloe; Chris Marchbanks, wife Rebecca and children Noah, Grace, Anna, and Josiah; David Michael Marchbanks, wife Megan and son Eli; Lauren Davis, husband Wesley and children Andrew, Aiden, Ansley, Blayne, and Hattie; Matthew Marchbanks, wife Casey and children Cadent and Lilly Mae; Paul Marchbanks, wife Lacy, and daughters Emma and Maddie; Timothy Marchbanks; Amber Willis, husband Mark and children Caleb, Cilas, and Case; Jared Tims, wife Amberley and daughter Ava; Amanda (Betik) Pustejovsky, husband Daniel, and children Addison and Brooklyn; Kati (Betik) Arnold, husband Jeff and children Halli, Charli, and Claire; DJ Betik, wife Heather, and children Brayden, Kinslee, and Emery; John Timothy Cox, and wife Natalie; Sarah Cox.

David's surviving sibling is Gwen Richards.

He joins family in heaven including wife Carol Cox, parents Kyle and Nellie Cox, sisters Barbara Young and Iweeta "Sissy" Jordan, brother Bobbie Cox, and children Dave Cox and Allison Beggs Tims.

The Cox family is unique. On their wedding day, David and Carol brought their families together and gave them a new start. David worked hard to provide, while Carol settled in to make a home. This resulted in a family that is a true miracle, and a testimony to God's redemptive love. The words etched in stone where Nonnie will lay to rest read: "Our Family – Many Branches, Not All The Same Root, But Growing As One".

His services will be held at J.E. Keever Mortuary, 408 N. Dallas Street, in Ennis, TX. Visitation is Sunday, March 20th, 3 – 5 p.m. Funeral Services will be officiated by Mike Sellers on Monday, March 21st, at 2 p.m. in the J.E. Keever Mortuary Chapel. Pallbearers are Chris Marchbanks, Jason Cox, David Michael Marchbanks, Jared Tims, DJ Betik, and John Cox.
