POLICE CHIEF OF JONESVILLE DIED ON SUNDAY

Funeral Held Yesterday, Many Attended Last Rites, Was Taken Ill and Died Very Suddenly

Jonesville, LA., July 4 -- Samuel Atkins, age 46, Chief of Police of Jonesville, principle city of Catahoula Parish, whose death in Natchez at a hospital on Sunday night caused widespread sorrow in Catahoula and neighboring Parishes, was laid to rest at the family plot in the Harrisonburg Cemetery on Monday afternoon at 4 o'clock and several thousand friends and relatives of the deceased Peace Officer paid their final tribute to his memory.

Chief Atkins, head of the Police Department of Jonesville for more than ten years, resided in Jonesville practically all of his life. The Officer was taken ill Sunday morning and died suddenly, after being rushed to Natchez for medical attention.

He in survived by his widow, Mrs. Ida Williams Atkins, four children, three sons, Roswell, Louis and Barney and one daughter, Miss Velma Atkins all of Jonesville, one brother Louis Atkins of Natchez, a half brother, Lawrence Atkins of Natchez and a half sister, Mrs. Hattie Roberts also of Natchez.

Paul-bearers were fellow Officers of Jonesville and of Catahoula Parish.
