Mark Jay Nelson, 83, passed away peacefully on March 15, 2022 at his South Ogden, Utah residence with family close by.
Mark was born June 11, 1938 in Teton, Fremont, Idaho to Albert Nelson and Lucy Devine Benson. He was the youngest child in the family that included brothers Don, Ford, Max, and Wayne Nelson and sister, Lucy Nelson Clark who have all preceded him in death. Mark described his childhood in Teton as being idyllic. He gained a love of camping, fishing and family. When Mark was 15 he moved to Los Angeles, California with his mother and step-father Walter Burrell. Throughout his life, he maintained he did not know how they tricked him into leaving his beloved Teton.
Mark graduated from Benjamin Franklin High School in Los Angeles, California where he played football and participated in the Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) program. In high school Mark won top honors in a speech contest, speaking on the topic of "The Power of Optimism."
Following high school, Mark attended Glendale Community College for a year and then joined the Navy. He enjoyed his two year Naval service and credits it as the best decision he ever made. His assignment was in the Naval Air Division, and he was stationed first at Ford Island, Oahu Hawaii. His second assignment was at Brown Field, San Diego, California. He achieved the rank of Airman, Second Class. The Navy gave him the confidence to believe he could accomplish more than he had ever conceived before, and set his life on a path towards higher education.
Mark met his first wife, Sharon Christensen, at a church dance while he was attending community college. They married on June 20, 1958 in Los Angeles California, and moved to San Diego due to Mark's Naval assignment. They have four children, Michael, Escondido, CA; Steven (Jeanine), Vista, CA; Debra, Poway, CA and Christopher, San Diego, CA. Mark has nine grandchildren: Bryce Nelson; Eric (Lindsey) Washburn, Blake Washburn, Nelson Washburn and Katie Washburn; Spencer Nelson, Logan (Katy) Nelson, Noah (Natalee) Nelson and Tate Nelson, and one great-grandchild, Daisy Nelson. Mark and Sharon divorced in 1972 in San Diego, CA.
Mark loved learning and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics from Brigham Young University in 1962. He earned a Master of Business Administration from the University of Oregon in 1964 and continued on to earn a Doctor of Business Administration with an emphasis in finance from the University of Oregon in 1969.
Mark taught college business courses at Utah State University, Logan Utah; United States International University, San Diego, California; and New Mexico State University, Las Cruces, New Mexico. In 1973 he accepted a position as an Associate Professor at Weber State University, in Ogden, Utah, where he spent the majority of his teaching career as a Professor of Finance. In 2000, he retired and was appointed a Professor Emeritus. Mark served as Business Department chair at Weber State and was awarded the Dean's Award for Exceptional Contributions to the College of Business and Economics in 1991.
Although Mark's main hobbies were fishing and golf, his love for flight led him to obtain a small aircraft pilot's license in 1972. Additionally he took a Sabbatical from Weber State to become a financial consultant for First Nationwide Bank, San Francisco, California in 1985.
Mark married Ingeborg Hebel Adams on December 15, 1989 in Salt Lake City, Utah. The couple enjoyed traveling and spent their winters in Palm Springs, California. Inge passed away on March 27, 2014, leaving Mark a widower. Mark enjoyed spending time with Inge's children Russ Adams, Melbourne, Florida; Heidi (Craig) Hansen, Ogden, Utah; Stephanie (John) Bjorkman, Kuna, Idaho and their many children.
Mark's family is privately celebrating his life. He will be interned in the Teton-Newdale Cemetery, Teton, Fremont, Idaho.
