John was a native of Sampson County and was a Veteran in the U.S. Army.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Nelson Matthews and Bert Page-Matthews; and his sister, Wanda Matthews Reeves.
John is survived by his wife, Bonnie Hall-Matthews of the home; two daughters, Lori Ann Matthews of Fayetteville and Anita Matthews-Goggio (Robert) of Fayetteville; his grandson, Justin Boyles of Raleigh; his sister, Linda Matthews-Tyndall of Wilmington; and three brothers: Donald Nelson Matthews of Dunn; Ronald King Matthews of Fayetteville; and Danny Martin Matthews of Fayetteville.
The funeral services will be held in Vander Church of God with the Reverend Michael Owens officiating. The burial services will follow at Cumberland Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to 3HC Hospice, 2402 Wayne Memorial Drive, Goldsboro, NC 27534.
