John Robert Caldwell was the youngest child of Dr. Washington Jackson Caldwell and Mary Thomas "Mamie" Parker.

His many patented inventions are mentioned in the publication Alabama Inventors 1821-1974.

John married Lillian Louise Huddleston (1911-1939) at Walker Memorial Methodist Church in Birmingham, Alabama on May 25, 1934. They had one daughter. Lillian died in 1939 and is buried in Elmwood Cemetery in Birmingham, Jefferson County, Alabama with other Huddleston family members. In 1943, John and his widowed mother and young daughter moved to Hampton, Henry County, Georgia when Southern States moved operations there. John met Southern States secretary Margaret Eloise Ham (1921-1992) and they married on January 15, 1944. They had two sons John Robert Caldwell Jr. (1946-2001) and Washington Jackson Caldwell III (1949-1949).

In 1947, John accepted a position as Chief Engineer and Production Manager for Meadows Manufacturing. He also was a member of the Board of Directors.
