William was born to Henry and Mathilda Kohl. He attended Clinton Kelly Grade School and graduated from Benson High School in 1929. As a high school student, he was a member of the Type-Hi Club and learned to be a typesetter. He worked as a steelworker in the Portland shipyards for a time, before working as an upholsterer for Portland Manufacturing and Biltwell. He was a catcher for the Biltwell and Portland Outfitting baseball teams, playing in the semi-pro business leagues. One time at the downtown Portland Elks Lodge, William was approached by a man who told him that he was the best catcher he had ever seen. William was President of the Upholsterers Union No. 65 for 16 years and a member of the Gateway Elks. He was married to Julia Wangler on Oct. 2, 1937. She died in 1983. He then married Doris Young on Sept. 15, 1984 and moved to Gresham, Oregon. She died June of 1998.

Bill always found the good in people. He loved the invention of plastic bags and rubber bands. If you looked in his tackle box, everything was neatly put away. He loved to go fishing and crabbing with his daughter Eellitta and son-in-law Ray. He loved gardening with his wife Doris. He never let a day go by that he didn't tell the people he loved, how much they meant to him.
