Maria S. 'Mary' (Faustine) Banas passed away peacefully at age 95, on May 2, 2020, after a brief illness. She was the beloved wife of the late George J. Banas, Jr., a longtime resident of Trumbull, Connecticut, and a resident of Crosby Commons in Shelton, Connecticut, where she enjoyed living out the last five years of her life.

A retired antiques dealer and estate sale manager, Mary was born in Bridgeport, Connecticut, on February 15th, 1925, the daughter of Italian-American immigrants, Pietro and Assunta (Recine) Faustine. She was active in the St. Catherine of Siena Ladies Guild, the Trumbull Historical Society, the Bridgeport Historical Society, the American Shakespeare Theatre, the Nichols Garden Club, and the Nichols Improvement Association. More importantly, Mary was a loving mother and grandmother who had many talents. She was a gourmet cook who enjoyed entertaining and sharing her gift of hospitality, an accomplished gardener, and an avid historian who developed a passion and expertise for 18th century crafts and antique restoration. Mary was also involved with the historic dating of homes in the Nichols section of Trumbull, and she initiated the tradition of decorating the street signs with holiday greens. Mary and her husband George were world travelers, always returning with special gifts for her family; and at their summer home in Cape Cod, family and friends always enjoyed being their guests. Mary will be especially remembered for her kindness, her generosity, her great sense of humor, and her memorable expressions.

She will be missed and long remembered by her three children, Jane Higgins of Huntington, Connecticut, Robert Banas (and his wife Teri of Mystic, Connecticut, and David Banas (and his wife Tina) of Trumbull; her daughter-in-law, Elaine Banas of Hamden, Connecticut; her nine grandchildren, James (Heather), Katherine (Mark), Sarah (Craig), Mary, Nicholas, Matthew, Christopher, Laura, and Andrew; and her six great-grandchildren, Charles, Molly, Robert, Adelaide, Samantha, and Sophia. She was also survived by two sisters-in-law, Helen Banas and Marie Faustine, as well as several nieces and nephews. Mary was predeceased by her devoted husband George; her son George; her three brothers, John Faustine, Nick Faustine, and Peter Faustine; and her son-in-law James Higgins. Due to Covid virus concerns regarding social gatherings, funeral services and interment were held privately. Arrangements were entrusted to the Abriola Parkview Funeral Home in Trumbull.
