Ava was the third child and first daughter born at home in Bethune, Colorado, to Daniel Edward and Nina Beatrice (Adair) Overholser on her father's birthday, February 15, 1926. About five years later twins were born, Phillip and Phyllis. Ava attended school her first five years in Colorado and the next six years at Norton, Kansas. With a scholarship she attended Kansas City Secretarial College in Kansas City, Missouri.
On September 2, 1944, Ava married Donald A. Dixon and to this union three daughters were born, Donette, Susan, and Linda. Ava is survived by three grandchildren, Deanna, Juanathan, and Trishawna; ten great-grandchildren, Megan, Bree, Domanique, Mariah, Juanathan Jr., Jacob, Daniel, Romy, Max, and Luna; and five great-great-grandchildren, Ava, Taj, Luna, Skylar, and Aiden. She leaves numerous nieces and nephews.
Ava loved playing cards, any card game: pinochle, canasta, pitch, bridge, and even solitaire. Ava was winning card games up to her last few days. Ava also crocheted afghans for the Red Cross, became a Girl Scout Leader, taught Sunday School, and even taught Kindergarten for a year. Ava worked at Bank of America, Bud Eyre Chevrolet as Credit Manager, and at Murphy Motors and Underwood Auto Works as the Office Manager winning many awards for her consistent and accurate balancing.
Ava left her Ridgecrest home of forty years in January 2021 and moved into Columbus Estates, a Senior Living facility in Bakersfield. She loved playing Bingo for candy bars or quarters. She always came back to the room with a cache of candy or $5 to $10 in quarters!
A family Celebration of Life was held in Bakersfield. Her ashes will be interred next to her husband in Desert Memorial Cemetery, Ridgecrest, CA. Remembrances can be made to Hoffman Hospice, 4325 Buena Vista Road, Bakersfield, CA 93311.
