From 1953-1954, Joe served his country in Korea and reached the rank of Corporal of the 501st Signal Company, where he made many friends that lasted a lifetime. Joe returned to Houston and resumed his career at Bell Telephone where he met Bettye Floyd and was married to her until her death in 2005. They had one child, Kathye Jo Hudgens which they cherished, and have two grand-daughters and three great-grand-daughters, one of which was named after him.
In 1983 after several promotions and special projects such as conversion of the Houston region to digital communication systems, Joe retired from Southwestern Bell Telephone Company. He and Bettye travelled in their Winnebago to several states seeing the US and visiting many friends and relatives.
Joe was predeceased by his parents, Ernest E. Hudgens and Erma Wilson Hudgens, his wife Bettye Hudgens, and his brother Ernest W. Hudgens. He is survived by his daughter, Kathye H. Carpenter, her husband Leon J. Keeble, his granddaughter Amanda M. Black and her husband Dakotah Black, his granddaughter Kellye M. Henkelman and her husband Bob Henkelman, and three great-granddaughters, Terra Joe Black, Chloe Black, and River Black. He leaves behind a sweet dachshund named Rocky that loved him, plus dozens of friends and relatives that will miss his gentle nature, funny stories, and strong love of life.
