Helen Dean Long the daughter of Carl and Evelyn (Norling) Lake was born on the family farm, in Garfield Township, west of Red Oak, Iowa on February 25, 1931. She went home to be with Jesus on Tuesday, March 15, 2022 at the Josie Harper Hospice House in Omaha, Nebraska at the age of 91 years and 21 days.

Helen attended Garfield #6 grade school, and then attended High School in Emerson, Iowa graduating as Valedictorian of her class of 1948. On July 10, 1950, Helen was united in marriage to Dwaine C. Long at Hawthorne. They were married 53 years. To this union two children were born, Dale and Susan.

Helen worked alongside of Dwaine, on the Long Family Farm, which was homesteaded in 1871. Working as partner in their business, Helen helped with the farm work, bookkeeping, and purchasing grain commodities. Helen could run most machinery including the combines and tractors. She helped with their grain business, Long Grain Co., and enjoyed dealing with the customers and grain buyers. Plus, she fed scores of their employees, along with several others who seemed to stop by near the noon hour. Any & all were offered a place at the table, and nobody ever went away hungry.

Dwaine and Helen worked hard and played hard too. They enjoyed roller-skating for many years, plus they square danced with the Buckles and Bows, in Red Oak. The family's favorite activity was boating and water skiing at Black Hawk Lake in Iowa, Lake of the Ozarks in Missouri, and at Beaver Lake in Nebraska. Helen was a lifelong member of the Hawthorne United Methodist and UMW. She served as the clerk of Garfield Township. Helen was one of the original founders of the Red Oak Tigerettes, Tag-A-Longs booster club. She was a Montgomery County Homemaker of the Year in 1971. She was a 4-H leader and helped with the Montgomery County Fair for many years. She received the Montgomery County Fair Hall of Fame award. Helen and Dwaine (Posthumously) received the Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame award at the State Fair in August of 2009. Helen's family was so important to her, and she found boundless joy in attending all of her children and grandchildren's activities throughout the years. She was their biggest fan in everything the did. They were all very special to her. In 2010, she moved to Omaha to Sunridge Village, Retirement Community, where she lived until February 2022.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Dwaine Long on December 13, 2003, her daughter, Susan Wagaman; brothers: Bill Lake and James Lake; sister-in-law, Elsie Lake.

Helen is survived by her son, Dale (Kim) Long of Plattsmouth, NE; four grandchildren: Kyle (Audrey) Long of Scottsbluff, NE, Jamison "JD" (Katelyn) Long of Papillion, NE, Danielle Wagaman of Council Bluffs, IA, Lindsey (James) O'Doherty of Gretna, NE; plus 8 great-grandchildren; son-in-law, Jerry (Cindi) Wagaman of Emerson, IA; sister, Bunny Lake of Huntington Beach, CA; brother-in-law, Ronald (Suzie) Long of Cameron, MO; along with many nieces, nephews, and friends.
