For 12 seasons he was a pitcher for the New York Yankees (1956-1957), the Kansas City Athletics (1957-1959, 1966), the New York Yankees (1959-1964), the Cleveland Indians (1965) and the New York Mets (1966-1967). His most notable season came in 1962 when he posted 23 victories in the American League and was voted MVP in the 1962 World Series. He also played in the 1960, 1961, 1963 and 1964 World Series and two All-Star Games in 1962. He attended Chelsea High School in Chelsea Oklahoma, then attended Missouri State University. In 338 games he started in 257 posted 20 shutouts, 11 saves, a 3.62 ERA with a win/lose record of 107-99. After baseball he became a professional golfer and won the Midwest PGA Championship in 1980 that qualified him to play on the PGA Tour in 1981 and 1982. He also played on the Senior PGA Tour.
