Mary Elizabeth Bryant Hamilton

Elizabeth B. Hamilton, born Mary Elizabeth Bryant to Sallie Ancell (Harris) Bryant and William Allen Bryant on April 10,1929 in Charlottesville, Virginia, passed peacefully from this world on March 10, 2022.

She was the youngest of five children, the only girl, and the first of her siblings to be born in a hospital. She adored her older brothers and did her best over the years to stay in touch with them and their families.

Known as 'Sister' to her family, 'Liz' to her friends, 'Mama', 'Granny' and lastly 'GG', family was everything to her. She would (and did) do anything for them. She was also a loyal, faithful and helpful friend. Her easygoing nature and readiness to make a joke endeared her to many. She grew up in Scottsville, Virginia during the Great Depression and the impression of those years never left her. She never took food for granted and could never bring herself to waste anything. She loved to cook, shop for groceries, garden, and eat!

She was known as a hard worker without one ounce of laziness. After high school graduation she moved to the "big city" of Richmond, Virginia. She began her career with the C & P Telephone Company where she made many lifelong friendships. After taking early retirement from C & P, she held a series of other jobs over the years. She even continued to mow her own grass until the age of 86! She had a tender spot for animals and couldn't bear to see any mistreated.

She was fiercely independent, and she was brave: surviving a devastating car accident at 18 that left her in a coma for 3 months; taking a flight to Guam (via Hong Kong!) by herself, in her late 50s to visit her daughter, son-in-law, and grandchildren who were stationed there with the U.S. Navy; leaving her lifelong home of Richmond to move to Memphis when she was in her 60s (again, to be near her family). She acquired her first laptop at 80! In her later years she overcame breast cancer, a broken hip, a fractured pelvis, broken ribs, and multiple other fractures. She survived eight mo

She will be dearly missed by her only child, Brenda Burns (John), her grandson, John Burns III (Erin), her granddaughter, Kelly Lancaster (Lee), her great grandchildren, Luke, Charlie and Elizabeth Burns, Raelee, Rhett and Avery Lancaster and a host of nieces, nephews and dear friends.

The family would like to express appreciation for the many wonderful caregivers and staff of Hearthside Senior Living of Bartlett that made it possible for "Miss" Liz to remain in her "home".
