Abijah Hastings Barrett Jr. served in the U.S. Army in WWI , 103rd infantry known as the "Yankee Division",made up mostly of men from New England. He was injured in a mustard gas attack at Belleau Wood,France, and spent the last several months of the war it a U.S. military hospital in Paris. He learned that he had cataracts started on both eyes that were burned away by the mustard gas and
never came back. He wore eyeglasses only for reading in later years.

Abijah was afraid of water, but his ashes were buried at sea near San Diego. His wife, Ruth Champney,was also buried at sea. Later in life, they lived at 1249 Manor Drive, El Cajon, California,17 mi east of Downtown San Diego.
Both died in California and were cremated in California .

They had two children, Lloyd Ralph Barrett (1921-2001)
Phyllis Shirley Barrett Roberts Smith ( b. 1926 - d. 2019)
