Robert Lawson
Tuesday, November 6th, 1956 - Sunday, March 13th, 2022

Robert John Lawson, 65, of Roanoke, Virginia, passed away on Sunday, March 13, 2022.
He was preceded in death by his father, John W. Lawson; his paternal grandparents, Octo G. Lawson and Marian A. Lawson; and his maternal grandparents, Lubertus H. Hayenga and Bertha L. Lawson.
Surviving is his mother, Lois M. Lawson of Roanoke, Va.; his beloved wife, Anne M. Pond Lawson; children, Madeleine, Claire, and David Lawson; and his siblings, William (Faith) Lawson of Havre De Grace, Md., Thomas Lawson of Byram, N.J., and Peter (Cathy) Lawson of Timonium, Md.
Rob lived every day full of enthusiasm for life and people. He was a best friend to his wife, a caring and engaged father, and a brother to all who knew him. He genuinely loved people, and pursued all his interests, including kayaking, swimming, skiing, music, and gardening, with great passion. He loved going to all kinds of concerts, from Elton John to the Cave Spring Jazz Cafe, to Floyd on a Friday night. He had an eclectic taste in music and could be heard listening to the Beach Boys, the Allman Brothers Band, Bach, John Coltrane, Sia and Bob Marley throughout the house. Rob was also an avid reader of geopolitical and economic affairs. He enjoyed investing and working with other groups of investors. He was known to think differently by friends, business associates, and family and many sought his advice and great conversation.
Rob grew up in Madison, N.J., the eldest of four brothers. He was a Life Scout, competitive swimmer, and trumpeter. In 1978, Rob graduated from the College of Wooster in Ohio with a major in Business Economics. He began work as the Regional Credit Manager at the J.M Smucker Company in Orrville. Rob's success there led to his recruitment by the National Association of Credit Managers (NACM) in Washington, D.C., where he led their fraud investigations department. His extensive insight into credit fraud, combined with his natural affinity to chat with people and ask questions, resulted in him working closely with the FBI on several high-profile cases.
In 1997, Rob branched off to start his own company, Credit Today, one of the leading newsletters and websites for credit professionals. As part of Credit Today, he also ran seminars for credit directors. Quoting a leader in the credit field, Norman Taylor, "His on-line magazine Credit Today is an extension of his personality (out-of-the-box creativity) and is absolutely one of the most influential and informative publications available to credit professionals today." In July of 2020, he sold the business to HighRadius Corporation, through which Credit Today continues to operate.
Rob met his wife, Anne, on a ski trip in 1990 and they both immediately knew each other was the one; the two married in 1994. Rob loved Anne's cooking; he would say, "this is the best [insert dish] I've ever had," which made it hard to go out for dinner.
In 2003, after an extensive search for the best place to raise a family, Rob and Anne relocated to Roanoke. Rob found there a great community of people: especially at the YMCA, the little pool in back of Our Lady of Nazareth Catholic Church, and in Downtown Roanoke. Rob swam for and coached Our Lady of Nazareth's summer swim team. He loved the league so much he volunteered as president of the Roanoke Valley Aquatics Association.
The family would like to thank the supportive community at Our Lady of Nazareth Catholic Church, our dear helpers Pam Mielnicki and Phillip House, and all the wonderful people from Good Samaritan Hospice for their loving care for Rob during his journey with ALS.
A Funeral Mass will be conducted at 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 19, 2022, at Our Lady of Nazareth Catholic Church with the Rev. Msgr. Patrick Golden officiating with interment to follow at St. Andrew's Diocesan Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. on Friday, March 18, 2022, at Oakey's South Chapel.
