DIGHTON -- Karen A. Schmalzried, 66, died Feb. 2, 2004, at Lane County Hospital, Dighton.
She was born Nov. 22, 1937, at Hays, the daughter of Edwin Andrew and Fern Dickerson Hair. she was raised on the family farm in Danby Valley, southwest of Brownell and attended grade school at Danby Grade School.
She moved to Ness City in 1948 and graduated from Ness City High School in 1955. She graduated from Kansas State University in 1959 with a degree in elementary education. She moved to Dighton and taught second and fourth grades from 1959 to 1962. She was also a homemaker.
She belonged to the United Methodist church and United Methodist kWomen, both of Dighton, Athena Club, Order of the Easter Star Chapter 241, TOPS Club and PEO.
On Aug 5, 1961, she married Edward Dean Schmalzried at Ness City. He survives.
Other survivors include: two sons, Jeffrey Dean and James Edward of Dighton; a daughter, Julie Ann Bearup, Denver; a sister, Ruth Filbert, Hutchinson; and three grandchildren.
Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at United Methodist Church, Dighton, with the Rev. David Randall presiding. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday and from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Friday, all at Boomhower Funeral Home, Dighton, Burial will be in Dighton Memorial Cemetery, Dighton.
Memorials may be sent to the church or to the Multiple Sclerosis Society, both in care of the funeral home.
