Walter Roosevelt Thompson, age 91, the second of six children was born on October 10, 1930 to the late James Thompson, Sr. and Elvira Wright Thompson in Easley, SC. He grew up in Anderson County in the Green Pond Community. He accepted Christ at an early age at Deep Creek United Methodist Church, later named Emmanuel United Methodist.
A career serviceman, Walter served twenty-two years in the US Air Force. Military duty took him many places including South Korea, Japan, England, Germany and Thailand. Upon retirement he made his home in Long Island, NY where he met and married his wife Annie Mixon Thompson. Together they had a blended family of eight children from previous marriages.
After retiring from the military Walter worked at Newsday, a major newspaper company in Melville LI, NY for nine years before returning home to Anderson in 1981. He worked at True Temper in Starr, SC and finally retired permanently in 1990. In retirement Walter kept busy as a regular vendor at Pickens and Anderson Jockey Lots/Flea Markets where he was fondly called the Pots & Pans Man.
Walter was an active member of Emmanuel United Methodist Church serving in numerous positions. He was also a member of United Methodist Men, and the Golden Age Group.
Walter departed this life on March 12, 2022. He is survived his wife, Annie of 49 years; Children: Dennis Thompson, Columbia, SC, Roslyn Thompson of Baltimore, MD and Michael W. & Tyrone Thompson, CA. Stepchildren: Gail Sandiford of NY, Jackson Stepchildren: Calvin, Denise, Darry (Vanessa) and Michael Jackson; Lillian (Jason) Barrios-Visintainer. Grandchildren of the home: Charis, Solanna and Addie Jackson, and many, many more grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends.
He was predeceased by children Penny T. Beeput and Cecil Thompson. Siblings: Isabella Jackson, Henry & James Thompson, Peggy Wilks and Dorothy Pressley.
The funeral service will be held at 12:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 22, 2022 in the Ollie Robinson Brown Memorial Chapel of Marcus D. Brown Funeral Home. The interment will follow at M.J. "Dolly" Cooper Veterans Cemetery.
