Chet earned a B.A. in Music Education from Ashland College in 1939. He played trumpet with big bands in Cleveland, Ohio and surrounding areas. In the same year, he was the Port Clinton High School Band Director and Supervisor of Instrumental Music in the county.

Chet and Martha Jane Diffendorfer were married in her parents' home on 25 December 1939.

In 1943, Chet and Martha moved to Cambridge, Massachuetts, where Chet was trained in cryptography at Harvard. He was a naval officer in the Pacific during World War II. After returning from the war, Chet earned a Masters in Music from The Ohio State University in 1946, where he was a brass instructor.

In 1947, he was an Assistant Professor of Music Education at his alma mater, Ashland College.

Chet left the education field and worked in educational publishing for Ginn & Company in Columbus, Ohio in 1965, the Follett Company of Chicago in 1967, and moved to Indianapolis, Indiana in 1973 to work for the Bobbs-Merrill Publishing Company.

FAIR, CHESTER J. (Oct 7, 1917-Aug 6, 1983), Chester J. Fair, 65, of Columbus, died Saturday in Mount Carmel Medical Center, Columbus.
He was a member of North Broadway United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Martha J.; two sons, Chester James Jr. of Chicago and Joseph of Indianapolis; two grandchildren and his mother, Mabel Fair of Ashland.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Southwick-Good Funeral Chapel, Columbus.
Graveside services will be held at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday at Hayesville Cemetery with the Rev. Daniel Kiger officiating.
