Harriet married Thomas Smith at St Mary's Church in Brading in 1859. She was well educated and taught at an infant school in Blackwater near Arreton around the time of the 1871 census. She and Thomas had 9 children before Thomas died in 1880. She married Henry Lale in 1887. He was a widower whose first marriage had been to an elder sister of Harriet, Elizabeth Lowe. Henry died in 1910. She lived the last few year's of her life with her widowed son Edward and his daughters.
