Father Anthony M. Luzzi, S.D.B.
who served in Salesian ministries in the archdiocese for many years, died July 25 at Horton Hospital in Middletown. He was 88.

His most recent ministry before entering St. Theresa's Nursing Home in Middletown two years ago was at the Marian Shrine in Stony Point, where he moved in 1995 after heart surgery. He served pilgrims at the shrine and also did chaplaincy work at Helen Hayes Hospital in West Haverstraw. He was a parochial vicar at Mary Help of Christians parish, Manhattan, 1989-1995, and at Corpus Christi parish, Port Chester, 1977-1980. Earlier, he taught for a semester in 1949 at St. Michael's School in Goshen, which has since closed, and was principal there from 1953 to 1956. In between, he taught at Salesian High School in New Rochelle. He also served at schools in New Jersey. Born in Sassano, Italy, he entered the Salesian Missionary Institute there in 1933. On graduation in 1937, he was sent to Cuenca, Ecuador, for his novitiate and college studies, then served in a mission territory in eastern Ecuador. As a Salesian brother, he began his theological studies for the priesthood in Quito, Ecuador, but in 1948 transferred to the United States where he completed his studies at the Salesian theological college in Aptos, Calif. He was ordained in 1949. A member of the Salesians' New Rochelle Province since then, he became an American citizen in 1955. He is survived by three brothers, Giovanni and Michele, of Caracas, Venezuela, and Enzo, of Livorno, Italy.

A Funeral Mass was offered in the Marian Shrine chapel July 30 with burial in the Salesian cemetery in Goshen.
