Jo Ellen was the 5th child born to Noah Jack and Paralee (Nelson) Smith of the Mars Hill Community. She and her brothers and sisters all attended school in Jemison. She was the first child of her mother to be born in a hospital. Joseph "Joe" Moore delivered Jo Ellen in the hospital in Clanton, Chilton County, AL. Grandma Smith was so pleased with Dr Joe she told him she would name the baby after him, calling her Jo. He said oh no, if you're going to name her after me her name will be Joseph, so that's how Jo Ellen got her name. This story was told to me by Grandma Smith herself.
Jo was always so much fun to be with, she was so funny and a great personality, everybody loved Aunt Jo.
She was so smart and willing to help anyone at any time. When Grandma Smith had to go on dialysis, Jo Ellen and her sister-in-law Audrey learned how to operate the dialysis machine so Grandma could be at home instead of traveling the fifty miles to B'ham to have the procedure done. Jo came home from TX to help take care of her sister Betty in the last months of Betty's life which was so much help.
Jo married Larry Hughes from Calera and had 3 children. Larry Jr, Allen and Rhonda.
There is definitely an empty place that Jo once filled. She is missed terribly.
She was preceded in death by her daughter Rhonda, her parents and two sisters Vivian Loretta and Betty Sue. She is survived by her two sons, a sister Elsie Rudean and two brothers Noah Earl and John A Smith.
