Sally was born in Seattle, WA where she lived out her youth with her three siblings and her parents overlooking the beautiful mountain that would come out to greet her many a day. She was an inquisitive child and loved visiting with her grandparents. After high school, Sally went on to college and is an alumna of the prestigious Reed College. She began writing fiction in 1953 and co-wrote the audio-visual reading course, Listen and Learn with Phonics. Eventually Sally bored of life in the United States and followed her dreams in 1964 to Great Britain working there for almost a quarter of a century writing brilliantly, fun and adventurous heroines books. She also taught Judo and had her black belt and was Mensa International.

Sally moved back to the states in the late 1980's and settled in Santa Rosa, CA. She continued writing and published young adult novels with one set in Ancient Egypt. Her books also highlighted cats with whom she adored and worked fearlessly for their well being in California. She also later wrote her memoir covering the first 30 years of her life.

Sally lived out her later years in Santa Rosa, CA with her fun loving felines of whom she worshipped. In her later years she was cared for by her loving dear friends.

Sally passed away at home after a brief illness.

Sally won many awards including Fanfare Best Book of the Year in 1968 and Horn Book Magazine honor list in 1963, and won the Woodward Annual Award in 1959.
