He worked at the Berlin Foundry and tended bar at Elmer's Place in Redgranite. Bob was a faithful, active member of the First Congregational Church of Redgranite for many years.
He married Virginia Schrader on June 30, 1962, in the First Congregational Church of Redgranite. Virginia, his wife of almost 60 years survives.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents and stepmother Lucy (Rowlands) Thornton; sisters and brothers-in-law Christine (Blaine) Hudson, Jeanne (James) Kelly; brothers and sisters-in-law William (Dorothy) Thornton, Alexander (Rose) Thornton; brother Thomas Thornton: and two stepbrothers Crodoc and Clarence Rowlands.

Bob loved spending time with his family and friends. The last few years he became an avid Green Bay Gambler's hockey fan, going to the home games with his granddaughters and updating on the scores of the games that they couldn't attend. He also enjoyed going to Green Bay Packer games with his grandchildren. In the summer he enjoyed sitting in his gazebo, talking with his friends, plowing snow in the winter, or just riding on a pontoon boat with his family in Eagle River. Bob was a man of few words, but he loved people, be it behind the bar at Elmer's, sitting at it talking with friends, visiting Lambeau Lanes where, when he was younger, he was an avid bowler, or at church on Sunday.
