Born in Boston, Massachusetts, he remained a quintessential New Englander throughout his life, even after moving away from the region more than 50 years ago. He graduated from Sharon High School in Sharon, Massachusetts in 1951 and then from Bates College in Lewiston, Maine in 1955. He served in the U.S. Army from 1955 to 1957.
Spencer worked for Aetna Casualty and Surety as a Superintendent of Claims until 1984 when he retired after 25 years of service. After his retirement he worked for CarQuest in Grand Haven, Michigan for 12 years. He enjoyed working with people and was known for his ever-present smile and great sense of humor.
Spencer loved his family, the game of golf, and the Boston Red Sox. His hero was his own father, Ralph Hall, and he strived to be that kind of father to his own children. At his best he had a three handicap and the 2004 World Series championship his Red Sox won made up for all the pain of previous disappointments. He was a member of the Second Christian Reformed Church, Spring Lake, Michigan.
He is survived by his wife Linda; his loving children: Elizabeth, Katherine, Steven and Michael; as well as his cherished sister Cynthia. Spencer is loved and will be missed by his six grandchildren. He was pre-deceased by his beloved son Kenneth, who passed away in 1963.
