Married Rebecca Fluckey at Morrow Co., Ohio on Aug. 27, 1853. Elected as 2nd Lt. of Capt. E.S. Sampson's company (Co. F, 5th Iowa Infantry) on April 25, 1861. Enlisted as a 33 yr. old resident of South English, Keokuk Co., Ia. He was left sick in Boonsville, Mo. on Oct. 14, 1861 when the 5th Iowa began its march to Springfield, Mo. On Nov.1, 1861 at Humansville, Mo. he joined Lt. Pickrell, of Co. G, and others to overtake the Regt. on their march. At Humansville he was thrown from his horse and ruptured. Rejoins Regt. on Nov. 3, 1861. Resigned his commission on account of ill health Dec. 2, 1861. Laid up at hospital at Boonville, Mo. with diarrhea. Sent to hospital at Jefferson City, Mo. Organized Unionist forces at South English, Ia. during disturbance there on Aug.1, 1863. (Known as Tally's War or the Skunk River War). Found on the 1897 Veteran Roster as living at 1117 N. 4th St., St. Joseph's, Mo.
