Percy was known by his family as "Perc" but in his adult life he chose the nickname of "Rex." He loved to hunt quail and dove and he also liked to fish.
In the Richland 1930 census his occupation was listed as mechanic. When he left home he went to Sarasota, Florida in about 1932 and worked at a tire store. It was in Sarasota that he met his future wife, Mary Elizabeth McDermott. Mary was a waitress at the Sarasota Hotel where Rex often ate lunch.
Rex and Mary were married April 29, 1930 at the court house in Brooksville, Hernando Co., Florida. As this was during the depression, jobs were very hard to come by. It was necessary for Mary to go to Westport, Connecticut where she found work at the Westport Inn. Percy went on to San Francisco and joined his brother working at Hobbs auto service and tire store.

According to a nephew, they actually went back and forth between Edinberg, Texas in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas to the fruit stand in Chicago with loads of watermelons and other produce.
They moved to El Paso, Texas about 1944 and where they co-owned and operated R.E. and Co. (Percy C. and R.E. Hobbs Produce)in El Paso, Texas.
In 1948 he moved to Tampa, Florida. He also owned and operated the Seminole Motel and Restaurant until about 1952. Rex operated a Gulf Oil Gas Station near the McDill Air force Base in Tampa for several years after 1952.
In 1958 the family moved to Phoenix, Arizona with their daughter. From 1959 - 1960 they lived in Gila Bend, Arizona where Rex owned and operated a Shamrock Oil Truck Stop. From 1960-1964, Rex owned and operated Hobbs's Flying A Truck Stop in Kingman, AZ.
