JoAnn T Smith (Age 79) of Fairfax Station, VA died on March 1, 2022. Beloved wife to the late Jon Smith; Devoted mother of the Michael Smith (late), Brian Smith, Jessica Woodruff, and Christopher Smith. Daughter of the late Robert and Edna Altmayer. Cherished sister of Robert Paul Altmayer. She is survived by 8 grandchildren; Ashleigh Woodruff, Jon Woodruff, Cristen Woodruff, Michael Smith, Brandon Smith, Danielle Princi, Nichole Smith and Morgan Smith; 5 great grandchildren; Jordan Smith, Miley Smith, Jon Princi, Carsen Princi and Sloan Princi.

JoAnn Smith was a life-long artist. After graduating from high school, JoAnn was awarded a two-year art scholarship to the Art Careers School of New York where she perfected her skills with sculpture design, oils, watercolors, pen and inks. She energetically painted portraits, still-life arrangements, animals, childhood characters, and landscapes. Even though she majored in Art, she did not begin serious work until 1974 while living in Italy, where she had her very first successful "one-man"show. She had numerous pen and ink drawings judged in the Arlington Art Center and took second place honors at the New York City Post Office Art Show.

JoAnn taught art at Heatherwood retirement community and regularly volunteered art classes at local elementary schools. As a member of the ladies Fleet Reserve Association (FRA), JoAnn created wreaths for the Tomb of the Unknown Solider. Her legacy will live on through her art and the teachings she taught her students and family.

Graveside services to be held Friday, March 11, 2022 at 2:00pm at Fairfax Memorial Park, 9902 Braddock Road, Fairfax, VA
