JoAnn Smith was a life-long artist. After graduating from high school, JoAnn was awarded a two-year art scholarship to the Art Careers School of New York where she perfected her skills with sculpture design, oils, watercolors, pen and inks. She energetically painted portraits, still-life arrangements, animals, childhood characters, and landscapes. Even though she majored in Art, she did not begin serious work until 1974 while living in Italy, where she had her very first successful "one-man"show. She had numerous pen and ink drawings judged in the Arlington Art Center and took second place honors at the New York City Post Office Art Show.
JoAnn taught art at Heatherwood retirement community and regularly volunteered art classes at local elementary schools. As a member of the ladies Fleet Reserve Association (FRA), JoAnn created wreaths for the Tomb of the Unknown Solider. Her legacy will live on through her art and the teachings she taught her students and family.
